George Softley or Softly was born in about 1832 in Godalming. He was the son of Martha Softley, a widow. He was christened on 10 Aug 1832 at St Peter and St Paul's Church in Godalming. His address was given as workhouse, and his mother was described as a widow.
George married Caroline in the first quarter of 1858 in Marylebone district.
Their son Charles George was born in the final quarter of 1858 in Canterbury district.
Their daughter Emily was born in the final quarter of 1860 in Guildford district.
Sadly, George and Caroline lost both their two eldest children in December 1863, within a fortnight of each other. Little Charles and Emily were buried next to each other in Nightingale Cemetery, Godalming.
