Jane was born in 1765. She passed away around 1854.

Research Notes

Jane Sommers but this profile should be changed to show her maiden name as Griffin. The Rev War Pension records for Matthew Vandyne (W6344) provide a Family Bible birth page that says "Jane Griffin born March 17, 1775". This same Pension file says her name was Somers when she married Matthew Vanduyn in 1792. This same bible page gives the DOB for her sons John Vandyne (b Oct 29, 1793) and James Vandyne (b June 12), John married "Rachel" on 6 May 1818. James married Mary Morris June 20, 182

  • Widows Pension Roll of 1835-1850 for Revolutionary War says in Ohio (page 295) Jane Vandyne began pension of 41.66 (½ half yearly allowance of the soldier) on 6 May 1838 for Sgt Matthew Vandyne and she was still receiving payments until March 1848 (this particular record ended on 1850, and does not show any payments for most of the widows in 1849 and 1850, but does not indicate she or these other widows died) https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/1116/images/T718_18-0295?pId=109626

Hi Jacob,

I just sent you email.

From the Rev War File facts that I've provided here for Jane, I believe her maiden name may have been Griffin.

To support the maiden name Griffin, I posted to her profile a copy of the Family Bible birth page. This page refers to her as Jane Griffin when it records her DOB as 17 March 1765.

Also now attached to her profile is an image titled: " #1 Revolutionary War Pension File Mathew and Jane VanDuyn", At the bottom of page 12 of this record, Jane testifies that her name previous to marriage to Mathew Vandyne in Easton, Penn, was Jane Somers. At the time she was married to Matthew, she was 27 years old and could easily have married earlier.

Also, in the image titled: "#1 Revolutionary War Pension File Mathew and Jane VanDuyn", on page 15 a Richard Griffin in 1851 said he lived with Mathew and jane for 18 years. His relationship isn't identified.

Please review your source for her maiden name Sommers, and consider the facts that support changing her maiden name to Griffin.

Keep in mind, only a profile manager (or perhaps someone on the trusted list, not sure) can change the Maiden Name on a profile.

Best Wishes, Peggy McReynolds
