Biography

Maria was a Friend (Quaker)

Maria was the daughter of John Sorton and Ann. She was born at Chester,. Cheshire on 26 October 1811.^[1][2](Edward Milligan's British Quakers in Commerce and Industry 1775-1920, in its entry for her husband, gives her birth year as 1792:^[3] that is a mistake, likely to be based on the age given in Quaker records of her death.)

On 5 September 1811 Maria married Richard Darby at Frandley Quaker Meeting House, Cheshire. The Quaker marriage record describes him as an ironmaster of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, son of Abraham Darby (deceased ironmaster of Coalbrookdale) and Rebecca; and her as daughter of John Sorton (deceased merchant of Chester, Cheshire) and Ann.^[4][5] They had the following children:

• Richard Sorton, born at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire on 12 August 1812^[6][7]
• Maria Louisa, born at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire on 8 February 1814^[8][9]
• Caroline Ann, born at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire on 30 September 1815,^[10][11] died on 17 May 1838 and was buried at Coalbrookdale on 20 May^[12]
• Abraham Maude, born at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire on 3 July 1817,^[13][14] died there on 18 March 1818 and was buried on 20 March at Coalbrookdale Quaker burial ground^[15][16]
• William Henry, born at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire on 2 April 1819^[17][18]
• Charles Edward, born at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire on 15 March 1822^[19][20]
• Rebecca Sarah, born at Coalbrookdale, Shropshire on 5 March 1832^[21][22]

The 1851 census lists Maria and her husband at Madeley, Shropshire, with her age as 60 and her birthplace as Chester, Cheshire. Children, all born in Coalbrookdale, Shropshire: William, iron master, 31; Charles, iron master, 29; Rebecca, 19.^[23]

Maria's death was registered at Madeley, Shropshire in the first quarter of 1860.^[24] She died on 3 February 1860 and was buried at Coalbrookdale Quaker burial ground on 8 February. Her age is given as 68 in both a Quaker death and burial record and the Quaker publication the Annual Monitor. The latter gives her residence as Coalbrookdale, Shropshire.^[25][26]
