Biography

Allen Bell Sourita was the son of Gustave Sourita and Augusta V. Lopez. He was born on 22 February 1878 in Donaldsonville, Ascension Parish, Louisiana, United States.[1][2] He was enumerated there with his parents and a sister during the 1880 census.[3]

He married Marie Josephine Alexandrine Rivet, daughter of Martin Rivet and Jeanette Montero, about 1897, probably in Ascension Parish.[4]

They had one known child together:

  1. Evela Victoria (Avelia) Sourita (1898 - )

The family was enumerated there in a rented home during the 1900 census. The household included their daughter Avela and Josephine's child from her previous marriage, Georgie Mullet. Allen worked on a flatboat for nine months of the previous year. He could speak English, and his wife could also read and write.[4]

They were renting a home in Jefferson Parish during the 1910 census. Everyone in the family could read and write. Allen worked for the railroad as a Bridge Tender, while Josephine worked in the home.[5]

He registered for the draft in 1918, during The Great War. At that time, he and his wife were living in Westwego, Jefferson Parish. He worked as a Bridge Tender for the Trans Miss. Ter. Co. [railroad] in Westwego. Allen was described as being of medium height and build, with gray eyes, gray hair, and no physical handicaps.[2]

They were enumerated during the 1920 census in Westwego with their daughter. Allen worked as a Bridge Tender. They lived in a rented home, and were all able to read, write, and speak English.[6]

In 1930 they owned their home, valued at $2,500, located at 126 Fourth Street in Westwego. He worked for the railroad as a Bridge Tender. They could read, write and speak English.[7] They lived on Fourth Street the rest of their lives.[8]

He registered for the draft in Westwego during World War II in 1942. He was employed as a Bridge Tender for the TP&MP Terminal. Allen was described as five feet six inches tall and 156 pounds, with hazel eyes, gray hair and ruddy complexion. He had one slighty crossed eye.[9]

By 1950, at about age 72, Allen was no longer working.[10] He was widowed in 1952.[11] He died on 6 January 1954 at Southern Baptist hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana, and was buried in Westwego Cemetery.[12][13]
