Biography

Robert is the son of John Southey and his wife Mary. The family lived in Fitzhead, Somerset, England. It has not been possible to find his baptism date and therefore it is likely he was born before 1714 (after this date the parish record keeping improved).

His father's will was drafted in 1727 and states that 'my son Robert' should live in 'the lower house' for as long as he shall live. The other children in the will had been provided with significant legacies and as such the will hints that there was an expectation that Robert would not be able to live a full and independent adult life.^[1].

Death

There are three burial dates for a Robert Southey in Fitzhead, Somerset.

A 'Mr Robert Southey' was buried on 11 December 1726, however, the Robert of this profile was mentioned in his father's will (which was drafted in 1727) and therefore he was presumably still alive in 1726.^[2]

A 'Robert Southey was buried the 11th Day of April 1744'^[3]

Another 'Robert Southey was buried May the 15 1751'^[4]
