Purpose

This One Name Study (ONS) is focused on studying individuals with the birth name Clark that emigrated to the Colony of Virginia before the American Revolution.

The goal is to write full and meaningful biographies for our ancestors, not just list dry facts.

Remember WikiTree is Wikipedia on Genealogy!

The goals:

  • Identify the Clark immigrants to the Colony of Virginia
  • Discover where the immigrants came from (likely England, but currently unknown)
  • Find descendants of the immigrants
  • Research wide and add siblings, spouses, parents, neighbors, etc.
  • Verify if there is an existing profile for each individual
  • Create profiles for each immigrant
  • Connect each profile to the global tree
  • Identify birth, marriage and death dates as accurately as possible
  • Create written biographies using full sentences describing the life and times for each immigrant and descendant.
  • Find valid sources for each individual, adding inline sources to each fact.
  • Ensure the biography is Genealogically Defined
  • Confirm all biographies are written in the writer's own words and never copied and pasted from another source
  • Document research with notes explaining anything that needs additional information, such as current research status, a lack of supporting evidence, disputed individuals, etc.
  • Attach any copyright free images
  • Add ONS category or sticker using place of birth
  • Add additional categories as needed
  • Follow all pre-1700 and pre-1500 guidelines

Some additional guidelines:

  • Always add sources!
  • Biographies can include events that affected the lives of the individuals, information about property they owned, descriptions of their military service, etc.
  • Link to Wikipedia whenever possible for events, locations, war(s), etc.
  • For profiles this far back, it is unlikely that there would be any images of the individuals. Please refrain from attaching general images, such as imagery pertaining to the American Revolution. Also refrain from adding backgrounds and stickers unless necessary. Remember, these individuals have thousands of descendants!
  • Written biographies are preferred for this study and within WikiTree. This is a Wiki after all! Timelines can be added as a separate section to a profile of an individual that led a full life, where the profile would benefit from a different view.
  • Lists of children within the biography is unnecessary as they are already listed on the page. However, if including children in the narrative would improve the biography, then referring to them as part of a sentence in a larger paragraph would be appropriate.

I used DNA donated by a cousin, Marvin Clark, FTDNA kit 60162, Haplogroup R-Y87922, to determine to which Clark family in Virginia we are related. DNA matched that of descendants of Benjamin Clark of New Kent County. As an older person, I have trouble understanding how to connect with other Clark families. Marvin did the Big-Y test and, so far, we connect with only two, one of whom I know and the other whose male ancestor's surname was HALL, not Clark! So that's a mystery. We descend from the same Clark family whose sons married Ellis girls and from Obadiah Smith, the Cocke family, the Woodsons, and others. Our Clarks lived with the Ellis family in the coal pits near the James River on its south side. They also owned land near Tuckahoe, on Upham Brook on the North side of the James. In 1728, Goochland was formed and they were in Goochland.

Marvin and I would love to connect with others out in cyberspace, so we can learn more about these families. [email address removed]
