About

This free space page for Evergreen Cemetery is part of WikiTree's Florida Cemeteries Project, and was created to document the life and times of our ancestors that are interred there. The Florida Cemeteries Project is a subproject of the larger U.S. Cemeteries Project.

Evergreen Cemetery is situated at 4535 Main St N, Jacksonville, FL. Evergreen Cemetery is the oldest, fully operating cemetery in the city. It was founded in 1880 and hosted its first burial in 1881. Evergreen has numerous sections for various fraternal, military and religious groups — especially a large Catholic section and two large sections set aside for the Hebrew Cemeteries. Evergreen also includes the old Woodlawn Cemetery and Mount Olive, an African American section.

Evergreen Cemetery is also an official arboretum, a tree sanctuary, used for educational purposes. Every tree on the property has a numbered marker, a common name, scientific name and brief description.

In the early 20th century, Evergreen became a non-profit association. Several important land transactions took place in the early decades of the century. First Board President Arthur G. Cummer helped the board acquire 22 additional acres from Woodlawn Cemetery to the west. Property near present-day Winona Drive was transferred to the City of Jacksonville for a public park. In return, the city ceded back its pauper cemetery on the north side of Evergreen. B’Nai Israel Congregation established a dedicated Jewish Cemetery within the Evergreen campus.

In the 1950s, under the guidance of Vice President and General Manager Fred B. Möhle, construction began on Evergreen’s community mausoleum. This garden cloister features a 96-foot bell tower. Built of limestone, marble, concrete and steel, the mausoleum complex is linked by wide walkways. An on-site business office, built in 1969, is situated just inside the Main Street entrance gate. From 1976 to 2012 operation of the cemetery was entrusted to the experienced hands of General Manager Richard L. Mueller, CCE, a fourth-generation cemetery manager. The current General Manager, Michael D. Ondina took over the position in 2012.

In April 2014, the Flame of Freedom, donated by the American Legion in 1969 to the City of Jacksonville that gives tribute to Veterans, was moved to Evergreen Cemetery from the Duval County Court House (closed in 2012). The flame is now at the entrance of Evergreen at North Main Street.

Prominent people buried at Evergreen are Isaiah Hart, Napoleon Bonaparte Broward, Cora Crane, Sara Hogans, Bion Barnett, Arthur Cummer, Waldo Cummer, Ninah Holden Cummer, James Eugene Merrill, Helen Pearly Merrill, Arthur R. Merrill, Henry J. Klutho, three survivors of the Titanic, Helen Hunt West, Captain James Floyd, St. Elmo W. “Chic” Acosta, Sr., Mary Nolan, the United States Colored Troops (USTC), Rocco Morabito, T. Frederick Davis, John Elie Matthews, John T. Alsop, Jr.

This page is a work in progress, and will remain so until the Table of Interments is completed. The Table of Interments is a sortable listing of persons interred at this cemetery, some or all of whom are linked to existing WikiTree profiles. Although all grave markers in this cemetery will photographed, the photos will only be displayed for persons with existing WikiTree profiles. If you know of a person interred at this cemetery that should be linked to an existing WikiTree profile, or needs to have a profile created for them, please contact Karen Hodges for assistance.

To Do

Project members are needed to:

  • Assist with data collection and grave marker transcriptions

Additional photography and GPS data collection is needed, and previously collected data can be sent by email to other members willing to assist with transcriptions.

  • Link existing profiles or create new profiles for persons listed in the Table of Interments

When complete, everyone listed in the Table of Interments will be linked to their own WikiTree profile, and to a photo of that person's corresponding grave marker. The created profiles can include other genealogical and biographical information as well as a listing of sources for documentation.

  • Validate links and transcription information

Profile and photo links and transcribed information needs to be cross-checked to ensure accuracy.

  • Create an audio/video tour of the cemetery

Record a virtual tour of the cemetery that can be viewed as downloadable media on computers, tablets or other device. Such a tour would take the viewer around the cemetery to explore the history of the people buried here. Background information can be supplied. Those with mobile internet access can access online links to more information.
