This is a sub-project of McGill Name Study
The goal of this project is to help organize the history of the Gillhall estate in Coolsallagh townland, Dromore Civil parish, County Down, Northern Ireland. Another goal is to link to the genealogy of the residents of this property.
Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.
- List the owners of the estate in chronological order
- Find out if the Magills of Gill Hall are related to the Magills in the neighboring estate of Tullycairn.
- Add photos and maps of the estate.
- Nearby village of Gilford was established by same family.
- More description of Magennis family
History of Gillhall Estate
The land was originally owned by Magennis family. During the Rebellion of 1641, they took the side of the rebels and as a consequence, lost much of their property in the area. [1] On 31 January 1667 Captain John Magill received a patent from the king, Charles II. [2] By the 1780's Clanwilliam was in debt and began auctioning off properties. The house was believed to be haunted. The family abandoned the house in 1910. The house was destroyed in a fire in 1969.
