RESEARCH NOTES

Purpose and current status of this Profile

  • Gary M. Garrettson 2023-08-12 : this profile will become a "Sources" profile after preliminary editing has been completed. At the moment it is intended to allow collaboration on the correct transliteration / translation of the source. It is definitely a WORK IN PROGRESS - eventually I hope to transliterate all entries under "Guldin". Until then (and any help is welcome!), I am using "..." to mark places where I have skipped parts. Searching for "<<please check!>> will show the issues most needing help. The "questions" after each entry are sort of a "to do" list - any help answering them would be quite welcome.
  • Gary M. Garrettson 2023-08-14 : images of relevant pages in Bürgerbuch added to this profile - my reading of rules of online archive is that Signatur (Archiv ID) must be included - I have named the files accordingly. Most of the information included here is also recorded in Historisches Familienlexikon der Schweiz (hereafter "hfls")
  • Gary M. Garrettson 2023-08-16 updated 2023-08-27 : Note that there is another GULDIN in St. Gallen in the early 16th century, named Niklaus (or Nikolaus) Guldin (or Guldi), an early Anabaptist who was tried in St. Gallen courts in 1525/26, imprisoned and released - but lost his citizenship rights. I found NO RECORD of him in the Bürgerbuch. [2]. In the Ancestry.com profile Nikolaus Guldin managed by Kelli Kensill, Nikolaus is identified as the Father of Ulrich Guldin. Kelli cites Church records from Hungary for that relationship, but they may not refer to the same person.[3] Kelli Kensill also lists Elisabetha Steinnacher (b. St. Gallen abt. 1490, d. St. Gallen abt. 1535) as the wife of Nikolaus and the mother of Ulrich.[4] Another Ancestry user, Sharon Tosi, goes even farther back and identifies Bastli Guldin as Nikolaus' father. I have contacted both Sharon and Kelli in an attempt to find out more about the sources they used. [5]
  • Gary M. Garrettson 2023-08-16 : Based on e-Mail correspondence with archivists in St. Gallen, it should be noted that citizenship rights were hereditary and generally remained in force even when the citizen moved away from St. Gallen (for example, for business purposes). The children of citizens living elsewhere may or may not have been entered into the St. Gallen Bürgerbuch. So entry of a child's name does NOT necessarily imply that child's birthplace was St. Gallen, and a citizen of St. Gallen may have other children than those listed here, especially if some children where born elsewhere.

questions

  1. LNAB for wife of Melchior - Fridbolty/Fridbolt. Using name given in hfls (see note above)
  2. Firstname for first child born 18 Jun 1528 - ANSWERED (see note above)
  3. were Magdalena and Elisabeth twin sisters, one of whom died? Or was there only one daughter named Magdalena Elisabeth? ANSWERED, there were TWO, one died young.

comments

Interesting to note link between St. Gallen GULDIN family and BERN. Unclear why there is no note in the St. Gallen Bürgerbuch about Melchior's apparent move to Bern after 1532. The birthplace of his last eight children (from 1535-1548) is in Bern. Unclear whether other Guldin families remained in St. Galler, or left and came back later. His Nephew Melchior (b. 1529, son of Ulrich Guldin in St. Gallen) apparently returns with his wife to St. Gallen by 1552, after spending considerable time in Bern. His first wife (married 1550) is a native of Bern, and their children born before 1552 are also born in Bern.

First wife Catharina presumably died as consequence of childbirth, as month and year match birth of daughter Catharina.

questions

  1. what month is "gbr"? ANSWERED: it is "9br", with the 9 written so the "tail" goes below the baseline. 7br, 8br, 9br and xbr are apparently abbreviations for September, October, November and December.
  2. what is the second wife's LNAB?
  3. to what does the footnote for Habacuc refer ANSWERED.
