The history of the Kallfelz brothers might be a veritable fairy tale. Five sons and a daughter were born of industrious German parents, M. J. and Anna Kallfelz, at Merl, Rhineland. As young men, the eyes of all the boys were turned towards America—the land of promise—the fulfillment of dreams. The oldest brother, Joseph, was the first to leave Germany and come to America in 1881. His letters home were full of praise and love for the new country and ripe with plans and ambitions for the family. So, in March, [1888], the entire family left their homeland for America. Their large ship was shipwrecked in a storm. The propeller broke and the entire crew and passengers floated helplessly for five days until a steamer came to their rescue and they landed in Halifax on March 24, 1888...
