Soldiers of the Sixth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Luther C. Ladd and Addison Whitney, were killed on April 19th at a riot in Baltimore, 1861. They were among four soldiers killed that day, making them the first men to die in the Civil War.
Ladd and Whitney worked in the Lowell Machine Shop before enlisting. Ladd's remains were initially interred in Alexandria, VA and Whitney was initially buried in the Lowell Cemetery. Both were reburied downtown Lowell at the Ladd and Whitney Monument in 1865.
