History:

The Bible Christian Church came out of the original Wesleyan Revival and was started by William O’Bryan who was a Wesleyan local preacher, on 18 October 1815 in North Cornwall, with members, meeting at Lake Farm in Shebbear, Devon. From only a small denomination the Bible Christians grew faster than the British population throughout their existence. They recognised the ministry of women, and a number of women were appointed to ministry by the Bible Christian Conference.

By the 1830's missionaries were being sent into nations outside of Britain, and Australia was a favourite destination for missionaries by 1850.

Rev. James Way (1804 – 1884) was a Bible Christian minister in the early days of the colony of South Australia. He came South Australia on the "Anna Maria" with his wife Jane, his wife's son Edward and thier three younger children. They arriving in Adelaide in August 1850 and their older son Samuel arrived in March 1853.

The meetingg was held in a chapel which seated 160, which had been erected by local builder at Sixth Street, Bowden, on 30 November 1851. In June 1852 the Sabbath School commenced operation under J. R. Rundle, and within a year had 80 pupils. A larger building was required by 1855 so in 1856 the foundation stone was laid by Rev. Way and the 400-seat church building opened on 15 February 1857.

In 1855 he established the Victorian Mission in the state of Victoria, Australia, which became a separate district in 1860, which established the northern circuit in South Australia which was based out of Burra, South Australia. Burra being a Mining town and attracted many miners from Corwall, England

Other churches were established thoughout South Australia, ranging from the Fleurieu Peninsula up to the mid North and North East of the state.

"In 1907, the Bible Christian Church in England was amalgamated with the United Methodist Free Churches and the Methodist New Connexion, to form the United Methodist Church. In Canada, the Bible Christian Church had already been amalgamated, in 1884, into the Methodist Church of Canada, which later became part of the United Church of Canada. In Australia, it merged into the Methodist Church of Australasia on 1 January 1902".[1].
