The McGuire Surname

This was the name of the ruling family of Fermanagh in the 13th-17th centuries. [1] The Gaelic version of the surname is "Mag Uidhir", meaning "son of Odhar". "Odhar" is a personal name meaning "the dark coloured one".

Clan

The McGuire Clan is an ancient, distinguished, family, first appearing in records in 956 AD in County Fermanagh where they went on to rule and by the year 1600 County Fermanagh belonged to the family. Fermanagh was known as McGuire's county from about 1200 C.E.

The Surname McGuire is still the most numerous in Fermanagh county. Their strong hold was the Enniskellin Castle.
