Farm History

Spencer S Ballard (1806-1870) may have been the first owner, although his father Solomon (1768-1865) also was living on on the next plot on the East Pee Dee and Yadkin Rivers in the 1830 and was living on the West Pee Dee in 1840 with his wife Mary Ann and 2 free people of color, a man and woman. The farm was passed from Spencer to his son Stephen Spencer Ballard who was listed as a farmer and worked there with his sons, Jim Ballard and Oakley. Jim raised his family there with wife Aguilla living possibly in another house on the property in 1900. The 1910 census records Jim and Aguilla on Wodeville Road with their 3 daughters Mabel, Maude and Bernice. Living next door on Wodeville Road is younger brother John with wife Estella and 2 children, Thomas and Mary. In the 1920 census Jim is living next door to Oakley in Mount Gilead. He moved away from the farm after his children were grown and parents had died. It seems that Oakley stayed on the farm after his parents died and brother left. It is recorded that Oakley may have died there on 12 October 1973 or on a property nearby. His residence is recorded at Swift Island Road, State Highway 74, Wadeville, Montgomery County, North Carolina, USA.
