Henrys of Virginia, mid-1700s

Backed into the Henrys trying to find father John Henry of Susanna, born 1758, who married Thomas Locke/Lockey in Botetourt County, Virginia on 26 Dec 1777. She was (is) attached as daughter of John Henry-1659, born 1655/died 1790 and Mary Jones-12445, born in New Jersey in 1735 (married 12 Aug 1756).

Susanna Henry m Thomas Locke/Lockey from Wulfeck, citing Kegley:
  • Lockey: Thomas. 1777, Susannah Henry, dau. of John. Botetourt Co. Kegley, p 480.
    • Wulfeck= "Marriages of some Virginia residents, 1607-1800" by Dorothy Ford Wulfeck (available at FamilySearch.org)
    • Kegley = "Kegley ‘s Virginia Frontier," by Frederick Bittle Kegley. 1938.
Best finds in searching for more info for their families were the following two discussions:
The Locke family Bible gives the parents of Susanna Henry as John Henry and Mary. Thomas Locke and Susanna (Henry) Locke moved to Sevier Co. TN where he was a Sevier County Court Clerk.
Susanna had the following two brothers:
  • William Henry who married Elizabeth Jones in Botetourt Co. VA, 14 Jun 1780, bondsman Thomas Lockey. William Henry and Elizabeth (Jones) Henry moved to Sevier County, TN.
  • John Henry and Rosanna Jarrot marriage bond 2 Oct 1787, bondsman Marcus Likins, wit. James Poindexter (deputy clerk), min Randolph Hail, md 10 Oct 1787. John Henry and Rosanna moved to Cocke County, TN.

    • "...William Henry (Rev. War Soldier) and his wife Elizabeth (Jones) moved to Sevier Co. TN. There is a widow's pension for her giving their marriage in Botetourt Co. VA. Also Thomas Lockey (later spelled Locke) married a Susanna Henry, dau. of John. I would guess that she and William were siblings. She and her husband Thomas Locke also moved to Sevier Co. TN. There was also a sibling John Henry who served in the Revolutionary War. He lived just a few miles from William but in Cocke Co. TN.

Mary Eppes / Epes

I was looking for information to help with a proposed merge of two Joseph Royalls. And I kept running into husbands and children of Mary Eppes (sometimes Epes) ranging over a century. So... I figured I needed to play in the sand box with them :D
I'm confident that a Mary married (1) Littlebury Royall (d c1749), (2) James Robertson (d c1757), (3) Thomas Wilkinson. She is called Wilkinson in a 1790 deed of gift that names Robertson and Royall children/grandchildren and she refers to Thomas Wilkinson, deceased in her May 11, 1798 will. Between the deed of gift & the will[1] she names quite a few childrend and grandchildren:
  • Littleberry Royall
  • John Royall
  • James Robertson
  • John Robertson
  • Elizabeth Comer
  • John Royall, child of John Royall
  • Elizabeth Royall, child of John Royall
  • Elizabeth Jones, child of Richard Jones, Jr.
  • James Jones, child of Richard Jones, Jr.
  • Mary Epes Jones , child of Richard Jones, Jr.
  • Martha Ann Jones, child of Richard Jones, Jr.
  • Carolina Jones, child of Richard Jones, Jr.
  • Mary Robertson, daughter of James Robertson
  • James Robertson, son of James Robertson
  • Mary Robertson, daughter of John Robertson
  • grandchildren (parent not named):
    • John Archer Robertson; JAMES JONES; James Robertson (son of James); Mary

E. Robertson (dau. of James); Mary E. Robertson (dau of John); Sarah R Robertson.

What I'm not confident about is that her maiden name was Eppes (or Epes).
Rootsweb post that had 1790 deed & 1798 was about James Robertson's descendants & also had:
"1. James2 Robertson (George1) died Abt. 1757 in Will Dtd.1757. He married Mary Eppes, 12313 Abt. 1750, daughter of Llewellin Eppes and Angelica Bray.
"Notes for James Robertson:
"Source: Page 181 Vol I Ancestors and Desc. of Francis Epes I of VA by John Frederick Dorman
"James Robertson second husband of Mary Eppes, whose will dated Nov 4 1757 and proved March 3 12758,[sic] named his wife Mary, sons James, John and George, daughters Martha and Mary, and an unborn child.
"Chesterfield Co. Will Bk 1 , pp 272-73; Order Bk 2, p 381. On 1 Aug 1766"
The JSTOR article that listed the abstract of Littlebury Royall's 1749 will called him "of Chesterfield", so I think we're safe in grouping/naming these families, except for Mary's maiden name.

Many Mary Eppes - Royall marriages:
    • Will of Littlebury Royall of Chesterfield dtd 1749 names wife Mary (no surname), sons Joseph, Littlebury, & John, and brothers Richard and John. (see this article)

If you've found this page - my apologies. It is one of my note pages for collecting information. It's not really in any shape for sharing (and has a mush of info on it), but I didn't want to make it "Red" privacy because folks have found the Henry family and Epes family info useful.

Since the info on this page is most likely VERY outdated (it's been a long time since I worked on the Henry and Epes families), you should probably check out the live profiles of people mentioned. Most of the links in the first para are to WikiTree profiles. I think I might not have had one for William Henry, so here it is:

Cheers, Liz
