Runkel Castle is located Germany along the Lahn River located in the city of Runkel in the Limburg-Weilburg district of Hesse, Germany near Frankfurt.[1] It is close to straight north of Wiesbaden on the slightly northern arc between Koblenz and Frankfurt. It was probably built on order of the Holy Roman Emperor, possibly Frederick Barbarossa in the 12th century.

Interpretations of the eponym Runkel include 1) The Celts named the castle "Runkall", meaning "rock mountain."[2] 2) a Latin derivation of place of weeds[3]
