The goal of this project is to determine if there is a family connection between the Shively family that appears to have immigrated from Germany to Virginia in the 1700s, and the Shively family that appears to have immigrated from Switzerland to Pennsylvania in the 1700s.

Sometime between 1870 and 1880, my third great grandfather, Christopher McIntyre moved with his wife and three of his children, Edward, Harriett and Laura, to Thomasville, Georgia. [1]

It is not clear why the family moved to Thomasville. A letter from Harriett's sister, Mary Catherine Shively, who lived with the McIntyre family at Rose Hill, to a Jacob Shiebley on August 14, 1868, indicates that there was a Shively relative living in Thomasville around 1868. [2]

Mary Catherine's letter stated that she had a cousin relationship with a Dr. Peter S. Bower in Thomasville, Georgia. [3] We believe that Mary Catherine's letter is referring to a doctor named Peter Shively Bower. [4] This Peter Bower, who we believe to be the same person as Peter Shively Bower. is a member of Family No. 711 in the Shively Descendants, and he appears to be a grandson of Peter Shively and his wife Christina Linn.

The 1870 census for Thomasville, Georgia shows that Peter S. Bower was a practicing physician. He was the head of a household that included a John C. Shiebley (age 21), Jacob S. Kneller (age 29; a civil engineer), and Zacharia Smith (age 22; a railroad worker). [5].

It appears that the "John C. Shiebley" in the 1879 census was John Calvin Shively, the son of Solomon Shively and his wife Elizabeth Bower, and the grandson ofhe appears to be a grandson of Peter Shively and his wife Anna Elizabeth Heins[6]

We know that a Jacob S. Kneller was a son of Margaret Ann Shively, the sister of Harriett and Mary Catherine. His earliest known Shively ancestor is Jacob Shively.

Our relative, Jacob Shively, appears to have origins in Germany and his family immigrated to Virginia in the 1700s.<refNorthern Virginia History Notes, Sully's Shively Brothers, imaged in Shively Brothers .</ref> Peter Shively, the grandfather (through two different spouses) of Peter Shively Bower and John Calvin Shively, appears to have origins in Switzerland and his family immigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1700s.[7]

We have not, at least so far, found a family connection between our Jacob Shively of Virginia and Peter Shively of Pennsylvania.

We believe, based on the extensive information provided in Shively Descendants, that Peter Shively is the same person as Peter Shively, and the same person as Peter Scheibly. We have provided the Shively Descendants information in a comment on each profile, and we have proposed a merger of the three profiles.
