Elijah had 17 slaves at the time of his death in 1846.
His estate had 18 slaves at the time of its final sale.
Nine slaves were sold after Elijah's death and one elderly or infirm slave appears to have been a charge at that time.
Eight slaves were sold after the death of Elijah's widow, Mary.

As directed in Elijah's will, his wife received half of his slaves for her natural life; the 8 slaves selected by the widow for her lifetime, and later sold after her death were:

  • Bill/Billy, a man [purchased by son-in-law Richard C. Thomas for $560]
  • Jackson/Jack, a boy [purchased by son-in-law Richard C. Thomas for $381]

  • Lucy, a woman [purchased by Gabriel Bolling for $450]
  • Mahala/Mahaly, youngest child of Lucy [purchased with her mother]

  • Richard/Dick (probably old, valued at nothing) [possibly given to Joseph L. Howard, no purchase price recorded; alternatively, possibly provided for by son, Thomas Dehart]
