Biography

Thomas Rose was the son of John Rose of Wye, Kent.

His year of birth is not known but estimated as circa 1470 as he was married to Agnes and had children in 1502.[1]

Thomas was married to Agnes, who died before 1526[2] and had the following children:

  • John Rose (not mentioned in the will of his grandfather John Rose written 1502),
  • Alice Rose born before 1502[1], who married Robert Tilden,[2]
  • Johane Rose born before 1502[1] who married Thomas Payne[2],
  • Agnes Rose born before 1502[1], who married William Haulk, [2]
  • Alice Rose the younger born before 1502.[1]

Family wills:

  • Beneficiary in the will of his father John Rose of Wye written 14th March 17th year of King Henry VII and proved 18th April 1505, Described as having children.[1]
  • Beneficiary in the will of his step mother Agnes Rose widow of Wye written 10 Apr 1511. Described as step son.[3]


Thomas died circa 1527 in Wye.[2]

Thomas left a will:

  • Thomas Rose of Wye, Kent, yeoman written 14th February 1527 and proved 3rd April 1527.[2]

In his will it is stated that his parents and wife were deceased. Some of the beneficiaries were:

  • His sister Alice Serlylls
  • Avisse Jancoke (her daughters: Thomasyn, Avys & Elizabeth) his servant
  • His grandchild of Thomas Payne & Joane his daughter,
  • His two granddaughters, children of Robert Tilden & Alice his daughter,
  • His servant John Tilden,
  • His servant Giles Jancoke (under 22 years old),
  • "Old Thomas Serlys" probably Thomas Serlys who died in 1533 Wye,
  • Thomas Awsten, Chanon of Combewell
  • His son John Rose
  • His executors John and James Edynden,
  • His overseers Richard Walker master of the College of Wye & William Serlys of London, mercer,
  • His grandsons Richard & Thomas Haulke
  • His grandson John Tylden
  • The witnesses: Sir Thomas Deykyn, master of Wye College and parish priest of Wye Walter Essex, Richard Colpin & Sampson Fowle.


As a result of this will, several disputes were taken to the Court of Chancery in the period 1538-44.

  • Defendants: the steward and bailiffs of the court of Wye.

  • Subject: Detention of the will of the said Rose, grandfather of the said John Tylden and Thomasyn, and of deeds relating to a messuage and land in Wye. (Both parties recite the will, which disposes also of lands at Brumpford, Bilting and Frogebroke, otherwise spelt Fayerbroke). Kent
