Trying to find out which son's of Rev Tobias Wagner is the father/s or Grand Father/'s of George D Wagner 1797–1863, John G Wagner 1791-1848, and Daniel G Wagner 1806–1859. Who all died in West Beaver Twp, Union County, PA.

Passed down family history from Pastor E. R. Wagner says they all came from Berks County PA. And John's Grandfather was, and probably was in the case of George and Daniel, The Rev. Tobias Wagner who was a German Lutheran missionary. He settled in the Reading PA area then returned to Germany leaving behind all his (by then adult) children except one Daughter. It's possible George and Daniel are Great Grandsons of Tobias?

Note concerning Rev Edwin Reuben (E R) Wagner PHD (1855 - 1938) Son of Isaac Wagner (1821 - 1887)

Before E. R. Wagner's death in 1938 he wrote The Isaac Wagner family tree with comments by E. R. Wagner. E. R. Wagner was the Grandson of John D Wagner. He said John D was the son of one Nickolas Wagner and Grandson of Rev Tobias. However Rev Tobias didn't have a son named Nickolas on any document I've found, could have been an unknown nickname for middle name?. So below at various points, I'll add links to profiles of Nickolas Wagner's of the time period.

So now I'm trying to research if John D was a Great-grandson of Tobias. E. R. Wagner also stated he was a descendant of Martian Luther himself. However, I haven't found a document that links Rev Tobias's family directly to Luther, just one that says Tobias' ancestors are related through the line of Luther's grandchildren, through his daughter. There are many documents for Tobias's ancestors (Father, Great Grandfather, GG GF, and GGG I think), but none of these other documents make any reference to being related to Luther. There are links to these documents on Rev & M Tobias Wagner's profile. Also see Their (Edwin, Isaac, and John) profile for more information.

I have found some references that say Martian Luther's daughter Margaret was first married to one Claes Wagner and had a son. Some of the other references dispute that. I'll try and remember to add the links later. One link I go to is https://www.geni.com/people/Johann-Georg-Claes-Wagner/6000000002959173417 which would explain were the John and George names in the Tobias line may have come from.

Rev & M Tobias Wagner 1695-1764

George D Wagner (1797 - 1863)

Daniel G Wagner (1806 - 1859)

NOTE: Found old information on 20 Feb 2017 that there is a book that says George D and Daniel G's father was a John C Wagner. See George and Daniels's profile for the information. If true they would have to be Rev Tobias Wagner's Great Grand Sons as Tobias's only son named John didn't have any kids name George or Daniel. Note, his only son named John (Wagner-5392) had a son named John Christian but he Died as a child.

John G Wagner (1791 - 1848)

Son's of Rev Tobias Wagner.

Tobias Wagner (1734 - after 1769) You would think he would have been too old to be George & Danial's Father. No descendant information found.

1. Archives - Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia The Schwazwald congregation was founded in 1737 and supplied by a schoolmaster, Philip Strieter. The first pastor to serve the congregation was Tobias Wagner who had come to Pennsylvania from Waldoboro, Maine (1744-1752). He served Schwarzwald and another nearby congregation which had been founded at the same time and was called 'Alsace' and founded a congregation (Trinity) in the new county seat of Reading in 1752. While also pastor of Christ, Stouchsburg, he presided at the marriage of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg and Eva Maria Wieser, daughter of the famed jurist and Indian interpreter, Conrad Weiser.

Lutherans also came here from Albany Township and from Lynn Township in Lehigh County. In 1746 Rev. H. M. Muhlenberg, pastor at New Hanover, arranged for 50 acres to be used by the Allemangel Lutherans to build a church. The earliest surviving record book was begun in 1768 by Rev. Daniel Schumacher, though it is known that Rev. Tobias Wagner had served the congregation earlier. http://www.berks.pa-roots.com/library/church/ChurchLocations.html

This area known as the Allemangel (as it is generally spelled today) is a bit confusing in terms of the present-day counties. Basically, the term refers to an area of the northwest part Lehigh Co and the northeast part of Berks county that is bounded on the north by the Blue Ridge, and roughly comprising present day Albany twp in Berks and Lynn Twp and part of Weisenberg in Lehigh (before 1812 Lehigh Co was a part of Northampton; Albany Twp in Berks was the same as it is today--in Berks) [2]

1746 (Owned some land in the Tulpehocken while living there)

Left Tulpehocken 1746, moved down the Schuylkill (River in and near Reading), built a house in the area that was to become the town of Reading. The Property subsequently became Lot #33 in Apr 1752. Was naturalized by Supreme Court action in session 10-14 Apr 1747.

More about house on the Schuylkill River. Built a new house "on the street on the Schuykill in the hope that a new town would be laid out there.

Page 539. All this time he had continued to reside in Alsace. From his home here he probably had five miles to Schwarzwald, fifteen miles to Moselem, twenty-five miles to New Holland and thirty-six miles to Lancaster.

PG 614. His house was on the road to Easton. He probably resided here in Alsace until his return to Germany.

The Schwarzwald Lutheran Church which exists today is only 3 or 4 miles from the Schuylkill River. Where on the river they lived I'm not sure yet.

1747 According to Pennsylvania German Blog, Tag Archives: Tobias Wagner. https://alyssumarts.com/tag/tobias-wagner/

Elisabet Mertz was an important addition to a very special family. Her grandparents were Johann Heinrich Merz (1708-1788) and Anna Maria, née Rosmann, who are known to have emigrated from Württemberg to Pennsylvania in 1733, and to have donated the land on which Christ Church was built. The church itself was organized in 1747 by Rev. Tobias Wagner, who began the Evangelical Lutheran Church Records with the first five births and baptisms of this couple’s children. The initial three children were Johann Philipp, Johann Wilhelm, and Johann Jacob, the latter of whom was born 18 August and baptized on 30 August 1741. It is interesting to note that one of the sponsors at his baptism was Anna Magdalena Scheur. Johann Jacob married Catarina Schelkopf, and is known to have served in the American Revolution in Captain Crouse’s Company from 1777-1778 (Second Battalion). Unlike his siblings he never strayed from his place of birth. Both his wife and he are buried in the Mertz Church Cemetery (Row 1, graves 35, 36).

1748 His Son Johann Christian Wagner (1748 - 1832) Is born.

1849

A Tobias Wagner on 22 Sep 1849 had a Daughter Priscilla Freelove Wagner, Christened at TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, READING, BERKS, PENNSYLVANIA. One of the last churches served by Gottleib Wagner 's father Rev Tobias Wagner, who left in 1759 to go back to Germany.

For this Christening to be in the same church with a father with the 1st name of Tobias and a Daughter with the middle name of Freelove which is close to Godslove seem very notable. This Tobias (Father of the child) could be a Grandson or Grand-nephew of Gottleib Wagner? This does not appear to be the same Tobias as Tobias Wagner noted in 1 June 1841 who had no children on the 1850 & 60 census, unless the child died prior to 1850? I have found no findagrave or Familysearch records of the death.

Rev Edwin Reuben (E R) Wagner PHD (1855 - 1938) Wagner-5530 Son of Isaac Wagner (1821 - 1887) Wagner-4591, Son of John D at the top.

Before his death in 1938 he told relatives and others I imagine that he was the Grandson of John D Wagner. He said John D was the Grandson of Rev Tobias and Son of a Mathias Wagner. However Rev Tobias didn't have a son by that name. So perhaps is was the Great grandson of Tobias? He also stated he was a descendant of Luther Himself. However I haven't found a document that links Rev Tobias's family directly to Luther, just one that says Tobias ancestors are related through the line of Luther's grandchildren (through his daughter). There are many reference's to Tobias's ancestors (Father, Great Grandfather, GG GF and GGG I think, but none of these make any reference to be related to Luther. I'll copy or link some family documents that express this. Also see Their (Edwin, Isaac, and John) profile for more information.
