War service: "he the said Thomas Spain enlisted in Pitt County in the State aforesaid in a company commanded by Captain Tartanson [Francis Tartanson or Tarrtanson] first by Captain May [James May] of the 8th Regiment of North Carolina on the 10th of February 1777. That he served in that Corps until the 12th day of May 1780 when Charleston was surrendered to the British the time for which he enlisted to wit 3 years had expired before he was taken prisoner and on the surrender he was exchanged & received his discharge at Charleston in the State of South Carolina – that he was in the Battles of brandy-Line [Brandywine] & Germantown and at the Siege of Charleston"
