Gladolia was born about 1897 in Ohio.
She was the daughter of Jacob Spain and Anna Strawther, the granddaughter of presidential servant Miles Spain, and the niece of Civil War veteran William Spain of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first-regiment in the United States to enlist men of color during that war.
She passed away in 1906 due to diphtheria and is buried at Oak Dale Cemetery in Urbana, Ohio.
