Biography

John Sparrow was baptised on 14 August 1636 at St Peters, Sible Hedingham, the third but eldest surviving son, and was by 1666 called John Sparrow the younger, Barrister at Law, of the Inner Temple. He married firstly Anne Harrington, daughter of William Harrington of the Wallases, Great Maplestead, Essex about 1660. Anne was buried soon after the birth of her son James, on 4 July 1665 and John married secondly Frances Harrington, a widow who was buried on 14 January 1715, by whom he had no children. John was buried on 27 August 1686 in the middle aisle at St Peters, Sible Hedingham Church, under a fair gravestone of blew marble with an inscription. PCC Will of John of Sible Hedingham dated 30 October 1683. [will at PRO] He left his capital messuage where he dwelled in Sible Hedingham and all other messuages, etc. to eldest son John, and left Bradley’s in Halsted, and Carter’s and Hawfields in Sible Hedingham to youngest son James. He left forty pounds a year to his widow Frances, in lieu of jointure of some lands now given to John, 40 per a year, and to his brother Samuel a sum of money as executor. In a codicil left a hundred pounds to son in law Jerome Richardson, being the remainder of his daughter’s portion. Frances Sparrow buried 1 May 1710 at Earls Colne.
