Biography

James was born in 1895^[1] (his birth was registered the following year)^[2] in Hull, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of James William Spavin and Gertrude Maria Lazenby.

At the time of the 1901 census James lived in West Hartlepool, County Durham, with his parents and his maternal grandparents, Henry and Sarah Lazenby.^[3] By 1911 the family had settled in Billingham, County Durham, and James was a brickworks labourer.^[4]

In 1918 James married Olive K Cook.^[5] She died in 1924 at the age of 25.^[6]

James married Agnes C Lewis in 1928.^[7] She died in 1963.^[8]

James was married a third time, in 1973 to Ruth A Thompson.^[9]

He died in 1983.^[1]
