Biography

Hannah was born in 1846. She is believed to be the daughter of James Spedding (a Blacksmith from Cumberland) and Jane Steele.

Hannah immigrated to Australia with her family when she was seven years old. Her father James was listed as a 38 year old smith from Cumberland. Her mother Jane aged 32, siblings Mary aged 11, and James aged 9. They were travelling on their own "account' (passage was unassisted).

Research Notes

Census record does not make sense. Hannah is listed as Hannah Williamson (daughter in law to James Spedding), and she is aged 5. Janes is listed as aged 20 (making it impossible or highly unlikely that their first child would have been born when she was 11 years old. Her age is difficult to read as there is a line through the numbers so it may be a mistranscription although the words 'daughter in law' are clearly written. relationships unclear. 1851 England Census
