Biography

Ages of Family of Five Total 422 Years - 14th May 1932 FIVE members of a family whose ages aggregate 422 years met for a group photograph when one of them, Mr. Robert Spencer, of Uraidla, celebrated the 84th anniversary of his birth. The oldest of the family, Mr. Samuel Spencer, of Oaklands, who was born at Magill, claims to be the oldest Australian male born in the State. He is 92. The others are Mrs. W. Stantiford (Glenelg), 86; and Messrs. James (81) and William Spencer (79). Another brother and sister, Mr. John Spencer and Mrs. William Moulos, were both over 80 when they died. All of them were farmers. Speaking of the early days, Mr. Samuel Spencer said that he frequently made trips to Burra with his father in a bullock waggon, taking about three weeks for the return journey. They carried flour and other provisions to the town, and returned to Port Adelaide with copper from the mines. They received £20 for each ton carried. When lie was 12 he drove a team of six bullocks to the Burra. Camping places were Templers and Black Springs. Mr. Spencer remembered the toll bar at a crossing in the creek at Magill. Drivers of teams were required to pay 9d. each time they crossed.^[1]
