Daughter of James and Sadie (Boston) Sponenberg. Her parents were farmers in Briar Creek Township, in the Summer Hill/Foundryville area north of Berwick.
Married to Lemuel Pollock Whitmire in 1919, who she met after he labored on her family's farm through the past year. The couple had a daughter, Dorothy, born in 1923. Whitmire operated a dairy farm, running delivery routes in and around Berwick.
They resided at 1725 Lincoln Avenue by the end of their marriage, divorcing in 1945. She worked as a housekeeper for Clyde Garrison, Salem Township, for a short while, before her sudden passing on Dec. 13, 1946, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. She was not in ill health. Her body was found by Garrison in his bedroom when he arrived home from Berwick. The funeral was held on the 16th of December, with interment at Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street.
