Biography

Marion was born on 2nd December 1850 and was baptised on 15th December 1850 at Old Luce (Glenluce). Her parents were William Sproat, Blacksmith, and Sarah Cowan. ^[1]

She makes her first appearance on the 1851 Census ^[2], aged 3 months, living with her parents and sister Jean at an address in North Street, Glenluce, in the parish of Old Luce, Wigtownshire.

By 1861, the family had moved to Kirkmabrick Farm, Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire where her father was a blacksmith. Marion is now aged 10. ^[3]

By 1871, the family had again moved, this time to Drumullin Farm, Daily in Ayrshire. Marion,now aged 20 was employed as an agricultural labourer. ^[4]

on 3 June 1872 Marion married William Milliken in Dailly. ^[5].

By 1881, Marion's family had moved to Girvan where her husband was a general labourer. ^[6].

In 1891, with no more infants to care for, Marion, aged 37 was employed as an ‘outworker’, another term for an agricultural labourer. The family lived at 'Drynan's Land', an area off Wilson Street, Girvan, once populated mainly by weavers. ^[7]

Marion died at home in Drynan's Close, Wilson Street, Girvan on 14th April 1894. Her maiden name was listed as "Sprott". ^[8].
