Biography

Thomas was born in 1739. He was the son of Arthur St. George and Jane Molyneux, dau. of Sir Thomas Molyneux, 1st Bt .

He was educated by Dr Hewetson and entered Trinity College Dublin on 17 July 1754, aged 15 years. B.A. 1758, LL.D. (honoris causa) 1778. [1]

Biography MP for Clogher 1776-83-5[2]

He married [6 Aug. 1776] Hon. Lucinda, dau. of Rt Hon. Sir Archibald Acheson, 1st Viscount Gosford (she mar. (2) Capt. Jeremiah French, 80th Regiment).

Children:

  1. Capt. Thomas Baldwin (80th Regiment), m. Eliza Mason
  2. Acheson, m. (1) [1810] Eleanor, dau. of Robert Gordon of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, (2) [1824] Jane, dau. of Hon. John Hewitt, Dean of Cloyne
  3. Capt. John (80th Regiment), m. [1811] Frances, dau. of Archibald Campbell MD
  4. Archibald b. 1782
  5. William Molyneux (killed at Trafalgar)

Education - School: Dr Hewetson; Kilkenny College 14 Apr. 1749, aged 10 years; entered TCD 17 July 1754; Middle Temple 13 Apr. 1757; BA 1758, LLD hon. caus. 1778.

Career - He was agent to the Bishop of Clogher and returned by him at the general elections of 1776 and 1783. Since 1763 he had been a commissioner and overseer of barracks at £400 p.a., which post he had purchased. He was married to a daughter of Lord Gosford (0001), and in 1778 Lord Lieutenant Buckinghamshire appointed him supervisor of accounts at £200 p.a. The bishop apparently had been reluctant to return him in 1783, as he had promised Lord Lieutenant Carlisle that he would return the Under-Secretary, Sackville Hamilton (0945), and another government official, Edward Bellingham Swan (2032). Hamilton was returned but not Swan, as at this turbulent election the bishop had to return his agent, St George, in order to keep his control over the borough. In 1783 Clogher was described as 'an ancient city ... The right of election supposed to be vested in and is claimed by the Protestant inhabitants at large but the Bishop of Clogher claims a patronage and by his influence and election manoeuvres, always returns the Members.' Meanwhile St George, who had always voted a straight government line, was complaining of 'not being more advanced'. He died on 1 April 1785, aged 46.

Estate: Kilrush, Co. Kilkenny.
