Biography

Born 1904 Skidby

James Edmund Stamp was born in 1904 in Skidby, a village in the Yorkshire Wolds west of Cottingham where the Stamp family were well-established. [1]

James was the son of a man with the same name, James Edmund Stamp of Skidby and his wife Gertrude Coupland.

Child 1911 Skidby

James and Gertrude Stamp have been married for 8 years and had 5 children, 3 present with them and 2 dead. James the father is recorded as Labourer, Contractors and in another hand Docks . This younger James is the eldest surviving child. [2]

Marriage 1926 Cottingham?

James STAMP and Annie Nicholson were married late in 1926 probably in Cottingham, where they later lived and worked, which was part of the Sculcoates Registration District. [3]

Children 1927-1929

The Stamps have two sons in Cottingham. [4] .

Start of WW2

James and Annie Stamp lived at 32 Southwood Road, Cottingham (Haltemprice) in Sept 1939. This was the main road out of Cottingham west, past the Castle Hill Hospital for mental patients and the Isolation Hospital for dangerous diseases. James was evidently a male charge nurse in one of these. Both his forename and his job description are muddled in this form for his wartime ID Card. Together with the missing "Cottingham" in the address this may have given him problems if he was stopped. [5]

Records are closed for those individuals who were born less than 100 years ago unless matched to a registered death record. These are probably two children aged about 10 to 13 - their mother feels free to go to work.
