He was a lifelong railroad engineer. He began his career with the R & D Railroad, that later became the Southern Railway. He was promoted to engineer in 1885 and moved to Spencer with the railroad when the town was first established around 1897. He was a trusted employee and always drove the President's train when it was used. He lived the remainder of his life in Spencer.
He married twice. He married his first wife, Lula Mae McCullers in 1888. They had one son together. After she passed away, he married his second wife, Mary Josephine Singleton in 1919 in Wake County, North Carolina. They had five children, three sons, and two daughters.
He passed away in 1929 in Spencer, North Carolina, and was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery in Cary.
