DEBORAH STEVENS,[1] b. at Andover, 4 Oct 1704 daughter of Ephraim and Sarah (Abbott) Stevens;[2] d. 17 Jun 1748 at Salem; m. at Andover, 20 Jun 1726,[3] SAMUEL CARLETON, b. 3 Jun 1696 son of John and Hannah (Osgood) Carleton;[4] Samuel d. at Salem 9 Mar 1767.
Several of the children of Deborah and Samuel were either mariners or married to mariners. One of their sons, William, died while on a return voyage from Barbados. Two sons-in-law Jacob Crowninshield and John Bowditch also died at sea: Jacob in 1774 on a voyage from Jamaica and John in 1793.
In his will dated 30 January 1767 (probate 7 April 1767), Samuel Carleton has bequests for the following persons: son Ephraim, son Samuel, son William, daughter Hannah Crowninshield, and daughter Mary Bowditch. He specifies that he has five children. Total estate value was £888.17.9.[5]
There are eight children recorded for Deborah and Samuel. The oldest child was born at Andover and the others at Salem.
i DEBORAH CARLETON, b. 17 Mar 1728/9; a death record was not found, but she died prior to the time of her father’s will in 1767.
ii SAMUEL CARLETON, b. 11 Aug 1731; d. at Salem, 25 Mar 1804; m. 27 Oct 1754, EUNICE HUNT, b. 25 Oct 1730 daughter of William and Eunice (Bowditch) Hunt;[6] Eunice d. 12 Aug 1827.
iii HANNAH CARLETON, b. 26 Jul 1734; d. 14 May 1824; m. 30 Mar 1756, JACOB CROWNINSHIELD, b. 9 Jan 1732/3 son of John and Anstus (Williams) Crowninshield; Jacob was a mariner who died on a passage from Jamaica in Nov 1774.[7]
iv BENJAMIN CARLETON, b. 5 Apr 1736; no death record found but not living at the time of his father’s will in 1767.
v MARY CARLETON, b. about 1738; d. 24 Dec 1805; m. 12 Jul 1759, JOHN BOWDITCH, b. 3 Apr 1732 son of Ebenezer and Mary (Turner) Bowditch; John was a mariner and died at sea around April 1793.[8]
vi EPHRAIM CARLETON, b. 20 Jan 1739; no further record found although he was living at the time of his father’s will in 1767.
vii JOHN CARLETON, b. 24 May 1741; no death record found but before the time of his father’s will in 1767.
viii WILLIAM CARLETON, b. 8 Apr 1744; d. Jun 1791 while on a trip to Barbados;[9] m. 1st, (-) Palfrey who died before 1777. William m. 2nd, at Boston, 1 May 1777, MARY FARMER whose origins are uncertain but perhaps the daughter of Paul and Thankful (Sprague) Farmer of Boston.
