Biography

William Morton Stewart was born in 1857 in Whitlets or St Quivox, Ayrshire, Scotland. He was the son of Hugh Stewart (1833 Newton, Ayrshire), Iron miner, and his wife Agnes Morton (1832 Newton Ayrshire). He was their third child and second son. He had at least seven younger siblings.

Around 1875-78 his family moved to Paisley, Renfrewshire, where they lived in Inkerman Street. By the time he was 17 he was also working as an iron miner.

Around 1882 he married Elizabeth Johnstone of Paisley, Scotland.

They had two boys in Paisley, Scotland, before he emigrated to to Australia. His wife and two boys followed him there, where they settled in Minmi, NSW and had a daughter, born in 1890. His younger brother Andrew was also settled in Minmi at that time.

His family lived in New South Wales for 2 years (according to his daughter's death certificate)

His wife and children were back in Scotland at the time of the 1901 Scotland Census, but he is not recorded with them. They were living in Collie, WA in the 1900s and 1910s.

Their children were:

Hugh McLeod (1884-1905)
John “Jock” Johnstone (1887-1928) m Susannah Adel Ozanne 1913
Elizabeth “Cissie” McAusland Johnstone (1890-1927) m Eugene “Jim” Arthur Charles Ozanne 1912

There are a number of times William Stewart appears on the electoral roll in Collie through this period. Because it is a common name, and he is not at the same address as his wife, it is hard to be certain if these refer to him.

In 1915, he was living in Day Dawn, where he was secretary of the AWA (see attached newspaper notice).

On his daughter's death certificate he is described as a mine manager.
