Oscar was born on 11 Oct 1844 in Henry County, Iowa. His parents were James Almon Stewart and Lucinda Cowles Stewart.[1]

Oscar was a Civil War veteran. He was 18, born in Iowa and residing in Danville, Iowa when he enlisted in the Union Army's Company E, 15th Regiment, Iowa Infantry on 5 Nov 1861 for three years. He mustered in on 1 Dec 1861 as Private. He re-enlisted and re-mustered on 1 Jan 1864. He was wounded in left finger severely on 21 Jul 1864 near Atlanta, Georgia and mustered out on 24 Jul 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. .[3][4]

The 15th Iowa Infantry was organized and mustered in on 22 Feb 1862 and mustered out on 24 Jul 1865. The regiment was involved many battles, including the Battles of Shiloh, Cornith, Black River, also the Siege of Vicksburg, and the Battle of Atlanta.[5]

He was a member of the Iowa Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.).[6]

Oscar married Annie Ogden on 26 Oct 1875 in Ottumwa, Wapello, Iowa.[7] They had three children:

Oscar and Annie lived in Iowa through the time of the 1910 Census, at which time they had been married for 34 years. Annie had three children, two were still living.

Oscar was connected with the Burlington Railroad for 46 years. He had lived in Pasadena and Altadena for 22 years at the time of his death.[10]

He passed away on 17 Apr 1935 in Pasadena, California and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.[1][11][10]

Oscar was survived by his three grandchildren, Virginia Smith, and Stewart and David Hayward.[10]
