Biography

Flag of Dorset (St Wite's Cross, adopted 2008)
James Stickland was born in Dorset, England.

James was baptised at Swanage on 29 May 1772. He was the youngest of eleven children of Thomas Stickland and Mary Smedmore. [1] James had a brother of the same name who was born in 1752.

James married Lucy about 1796 but no marriage record has been found. Four children from the marriage have been found

  1. James Stickland - Swanage 1797
  2. George Stickland - Swanage 1806
  3. George Stickland - Swanage 1808
  4. Mary (Stickland) Melmoth - Swanage 1810

Swanage Land Tax Assessment for the year ending 25 March 1815 show James Stickland as being assesed 4d for a house he owned in Swanage. [2]

In the 1841 census James Stickland 68 Mason and his wife Lucy 70 are living in High St, Swanage.[3]

In the 1851 census James 78 widower, stone mason, is living in the home of his daughter Mary and her husband Phineas Melmoth (and their children). [4]

At the 1861 census James, 88, is a retired Mason and widower living in the household of his daughter Mary and her husband Phineas Melmoth, Stone Mason. [5]

James died on 30 June 1865 and was buried at Swanage on 4 July 1865. [6]

Research Notes

My family tree on Ancestry.com [7] has a marriage to Lucy Chisslet at Templecombe on 8 April 1804 and the following children:

  1. John Stickland - Templecombe 1805
  2. Ann (Stickland) Warren - Templecombe 1806
  3. John Stickland - Templecombe 1808
  4. William Stickland - Templecombe 1810
  5. Jane Stickland - Templecombe 1811
  6. Louisa Stickland - Templecombe 1814
  7. william Stickland - Templecombe 1817

John (1808) and William (1810) could not have had the same mother as George (1808) and Mary so I have assumed the Templecombe records relate to another James and Lucy Stickland.
