Allen William Stokes was born in Henry County, Virginia about 1839. Parents German Stokes and Matilda Hunt were married in Henry County on December 1, 1837.
In 1850, in Henry County, Allen W. Stokes is listed as Willliam, in home of parents German and Matilda Stokes:

In 1860 the family was listed in Swansonville, Pittsylvania. Allen listed as Abner W. Stokes.
In 1861, Allen and brother John S. Stokes enlisted in the CSA. The local unit was organized nearby in Callands; Company B of the 38th Virginia Infantry. Brother John, serving as a nurse, was wounded in the Battle of 7 Pines on May 31, 1862, and died of wounds on July 10th that year.
Allen was taken as a POW at the Battle of Gettysburg July 3, 1863. He was sent to Fort Delaware, where he died of Typhoid Fever on September 17, 1863. His body was interred at Finn's Point National Cemetery on the New Jersey side of the river.
