MRS. H. A. HARRIS. ROCKHAMPTON, September 5.[1]
The death occurred at Emerald last Tuesday morning of Mrs. Harriet Atkinson Harris, at the age of 70 years. She had been ailing for the past month, but had previously enjoyed good health. The deceased was a native of Somerby, England, and was born on April 19, 1860. She married Mr. W. M. Harris and came to Australia in the sailing boat Corona with her husband and two children. The voyage took 16 weeks and was a very trying experience. They landed at Townsville and proceeded to Cooktown, where they made their home for nine years. During their residence at Cooktown they witnessed the turning of the first sod in the formation of the Cooktown — Laura railway. Later they travelled to Rockhampton, remaining for a short period before continuing their journey to Emerald. Mr. W. M. Harris, who held the position of Emerald Shire Council Chairman for 15 years, predeceased her nine years ago. Mrs. Harris was of a gentle retiring nature, and her many kind actions were chiefly known only to those who benefited. She was a member of the Methodist Church and although taking no active part of recent years she was invariably of great assistance, financially and otherwise, and her last concern was her inability to fulfil a promise for a forthcoming flower show. Deceased was the owner of considerable property in the town of Emerald and always conducted her own business. Mrs. Harris leaves five daughters — Mrs. Bristow (Rockhampton), Mrs. H. J. Goldsworthy (Toowoomba), Mrs. E. Fowler (Ipswich), Mrs. Clews (Rockhampton), Mrs. T. C. Donnelly (Emerald) ; and two sons — Messrs. C. H. Harris and F. J. Harris, both of Emerald. Two children pre-deceased her. Besides her immediate relatives, her only other relative in Australia is Mr. F. G. Stowe, a brother. Two sisters are living in England. The funeral took place from the residence of her daughter, Mrs. T. C. Donnelly. The burial service was performed by the Rev. W. J. Tomilson. The funeral was a most representative one, testifying to the universal esteem in which the deceased was held by all in the district.
