Biography

Henrietta was born on 1 February 1835, in Ilminster, Somerset, England, to Thomas Stowell and Mary Blackmore.

She was baptised on 27 Feb 1835 in Ilminster, Somerset, England.

She was age 6 in the 1841 UK Census on 6 Jun 1841 at Silver Street in Ilminster, Chard, Somerset, England. She was living with her parents, and older siblings, Mary, John and James. Her father was a shoemaker.[1]

She was age 16 and the daughter of the head of the household when they appeared in the 1851 UK Census on 30 Mar 1851 at 20 Silver Street in Ilminster, Chard, Somerset, England. She was living with her parents only. She was recorded as a dressmakers apprentice. Her father's occupation was listed as bootmaker.[2]

She and her mother in the 1861 UK Census on 7 Apr 1861 at Winterhay in Ilminster, Chard, Somerset, England. Her mother is listed only as a widow, and Henrietta's occupation is dressmaker.[3]

Henrietta Stowell and William James Champion were married about Aug 1863 in Chard, Somerset, England.[4]

She was age 36 and the sister of the head of the household in the 1871 UK Census on 2 Apr 1871 at 3a Church Street in Brighton, Sussex, England. She was living with her older brothers, Thomas (a physician and surgeon), and James (listed as his apprentice). The census states she was working as housekeeper. Her husband William and two young sons are not with her although she declares that she is married. William has not yet been found in this census. [5]

Henrietta Stowell and Richard Mulchay were married on 7 Jan 1878 at St Paul's in Chatham Kent, England.[6]

She was recorded in the census in 1881, aged about 46, in 20 Cross St, Chatham, Kent, England living with her sons, William and James Frederick, along with many other persons residing at this address. All the other occupants are widows with children who are listed as lodgers. Henrietta's occupation was listed as dressmaker. It is interesting to note that some of the other occupants of the household are needlewomen. Her new husband is not there with them but he is found in the same census at Fort Burgoyne as a gunner for the Kent Militia.[7]

She was age 56 and the wife of the head of the household when they appeared in the 1891 UK Census on 5 Apr 1891 at 14 James Street in Chatham, Medway, Kent, England. She was living with her husband Richard, a little 4 year old "visitor" named Ernest Lucas, and also two lodgers named James Martin and WIlliam D. Jarvis. Richards occupation was given as general labourer, and Henrietta's was dressmaker. Ernest, was the illegitimate son of Mary Eliza Nightingale Lucas, a widow at the time of his birth. Henrietta and Richard would adopt Ernest as their son. [8]

She was age 65 and the wife of the head of the household in the 1901 UK Census on 31 Mar 1901 at 20 Richard Street in Chatham, Medway, Kent, England. She was living with her husband, their adopted son Ernest, boarders Elizabeth Davies and her daughter Rose, and a lodger named William Jarvis. At this time her occupation was dressmaker working on her own account and her husband was a bricklayers laborer.[9]

She died on July 14, 1901, in Chatham, Kent, England, at the age of 66, and was buried there in the Chatham Maidstone Road Cemetery. Her husband Richard would later be buried in the Catholic section of the cemetery. Besides their burial records marking the spot, there are no existing gravestones today.
