Biography

Anne was the daughter of Thomas le Strange and Anne Vaux.[1][2][3]

Marriages

  1. Anthony Southwell, Esq.[1][2][3]
  2. Christopher Cocker, Gent.[3]
  3. William Mountjoy, Gent.[2][4]
  4. Edward Wilberfosse, Gent.[5]

In the will of her brother in law Sir Richard Southwell, the will made on 24 Jul 1561 and proved on 22 Jun 1564[6] he recorded that his brother Anthony Southwell was deceased. The Testator made bequests to Anne, the wife of Anthony Southwell, and the three children of Anne; Robert Southwell, Anne and Elizabeth.

Anne was recorded in the Visitation of Cheshire[3] as the wife of Christopher Cocker. They had two daughters, Mary who married Edmund Carey, and Anne.

Anne was a beneficiary and Executrix of the will of her husband Christopher Cocker, the will made on 03 May 1580 and proved on 13 May 1580.[7] The will noted the Testator's two daughters, Mary and Anne, but also noted Barbara Southwell and Anne Southwell, daughters of the Testator's wife, Anne.

Following the death of Christopher, Anne married William Mountjoy. Anne Cocke [Cocker], widow of the City of London, married in London by General Licence dated 23 Nov 1580, William Mungey alias Mountjoye.[4]

1583 case of Debt: Thomas Banckes v. William Mounioy de Colchester, Essex & Anne his wife, executrix Christopher Coker of Crofte, Lincs, gent.[8]

A conflict arose between William & Anne Mountjoy and Mary Carey, daughter of Anne, regarding a legacy to the latter from her father, Christopher Cocker.[9]

William Mountjoy died in either 1584 or 1585 and relatively soon after his death there arose a conflict between Anne and the sons of William.[10] The document is badly damaged with large sections missing, but what can be gleaned is that the sons brought a bill of complaint to Sir Thomas Bromley, Lord Chancellor (1569-1587) regarding their stepmother. The reply of the defendant, Anne, refers to a bond of £1000 made to Lord Clinton, Earl of Lincoln, by William Mountjoy. The outcome is unknown.

Anne then married Edward Wilberfosse. The Marriage Licence was issued by the Bishop of London on 05 Aug 1586 for Edward Wilberfosse, Gent and Ann Monioye alias Mountioye, Widow, of St Clement Danes, relict of [blank] Monioye alias Mountioye, of co. Essex, Gent.[5] The marriage took place at St Mary Le Bow, City of London, on 21 Aug 1586.[11][12]
