Biography

Frank was born on 8 Jan 1917 in Merino, Colorado.^[1] He is the son of Robert Johanna Stroup and Clara Agnes Knight. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps on 18 Jul 1941 at Fort McPherson, Georgia, and served until 22 Sep 1945, when he was discharged as a Staff Sergeant at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.^[1] Frank married Wilma Nelline Gault on 22 Aug 1945 in Cleveland County, North Carolina.^[2] Together they raised 3 children. Frank passed away on 29 May 2011 in Columbia, South Carolina.^[3]

COLUMBIA - Franklin Ambrose Stroup, son of the late Clara Knight Stroup and Robert Johanna Stroup died Sunday, May 29th in Columbia, S.C. Frank was born January 8th,1917 in Moreno [sic], Colo. His family homesteaded in Colorado until 1924, when they returned to Gastonia, N.C. Frank served in the Army Air Force during World War II in the 187th Airborne Division. He was married to the late Nelline Gault Stroup for 46 blissful years. He was preceded in death by his son Dr. Karl Franklin Stroup. He is survived by his daughters, Phyllis Stroup Bell (Joseph) and Susan Stroup Gressette (Ashby), and granddaughter, Dr. Kristen Bell Zulli (Jerry). He was the owner and operator of the C.D.A. Food Store for nearly 50 years. Frank took pride in having a strong work ethic and treating all people equally. Frank was passionate about serving others and even in his retirement, he missed his customers and friends. Frank was an avid sports fan, especially enjoying NASCAR, the Atlanta Braves, the Clemson Tigers, and following his granddaughter's collegiate softball career at UGA. In his retirement, he loved to travel and had many marvelous adventures across the U.S. and all over the world, including the Caribbean, England and Australia. He most enjoyed time at the beach and with his family. Frank was a lifelong Christian and member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. He was an honest, kind and generous man who was loved by all who knew him. His strong work ethic was admired by all and was certainly ingrained in his children and their spouses.
