William was born in 1875. He was the son of William Struth and Isabella Mary Elizabeth McKenzie Cunningham.

In the 1881 census, William (age 4) was the son of William Struth in Saint Cuthberts, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland.[1]

In the 1891 census, William (age 15), Masons Apprentice, was the single son of William Struth in Orwell, Kinross-shire, Scotland.[2]

He worked as a stonemason in his youth, and also competed as a professional runner. He got into football as a trainer, initially at his local club Heart of Midlothian before being employed by Clyde, which took him to Glasgow.

IN 1898 he married Catherine "Kate" Forbes at Edinburgh St Giles. There is no record they had any children.

In 1914 he became assistant manager at Rangers to William Wilton. When Wilton died in a boating accident, he stepped up to become manager.

He passed away in 1956 and was buried at Craigton Cemetery, Glasgow.
