Jacob Stults was born April 20, 1830 in Hightstown, New Jersey, one of fourteen children of David Stults and Harriet Hartman. He attended public schools until thirteen when he clerked at the Titus Brothers store in Trenton. Following that early start, Jacob had a varied and peripatetic work history mainly in the newspaper business; he was his brief partnership with a Yard ancestor. In 1849, he and James Sterling Yard of Freehold commenced publication of a newspaper in Hightstown called the Village Record published under the editorship of Yard & Stultz. Yard served as editor 1852-1854; Stults edited 1854-1861. Yard sold his interest and Morgan F. Mount joined Stults. The Village Record merged with the Hightstown Excelsior to form the Hightstown Gazette in 1861. Jacob also held newspaper positions in Long Branch, New Jersey; Washington, D.C.; Columbia, Pennsylvania and Philadelphia. He even spent some time in Nicaragua exploring business opportunities for a venture group. On May 10, 1858, he married Martha Jane Morrison (1838-1923), daughter of Rev. Robert E. Morrison and Martha Swift of Hightstown, New Jersey. They had seven known children.
Jacob died January 21, 1916 and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hightstown, Mercer County, New Jersey.
