General Sumter "fetched Louisa and (her brother), William to 'Home House', gave them the name of Sumter, and although advancing in years, began rearing them as if they were his own children. He forbade anyone's disclosing their origin and in no manner ever treated them with less respect than his legitimate grandchildren. And in all of this he assumed the burden, for Mary had suffered a stroke and during her last thirty years became increasingly helpless." (Bass, p. 226, 1961) Louisa "was a beautiful girl and an accomplished musician. She had been educated in the finest schools in Washington during the General's tenure in the U.S. Congress." (Gavaghan, p. 25) She also lived in Sumter, South Carolina. Louisa was a teacher in Stateburg. She died of paralysis "at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Mary S. Nettles, two miles south of Sumter... (She) was a reader of history, and of books generally..." (The Courier, January 10, 1878.) Louisa was buried on January 6, 1878 on family grounds in Sumter. (Editor's Note: Louisa had a grandson, Joseph M. Welder, who also lived in Sumter.)
