Biography

Giuseppa Sunseri is born 24 December 1892 in Trabia[1], the daughter of Nicolo' Sunseri and Vincenza Butera.

On the Karamania, departing Palermo on 24 April and arriving in New York on 16 May 1898:

Leoluca Sabella, age 25 (b. 1882), born in Italy, single, white American, son of Francesco Sabella and Lucia Coniglio, marries Josephine Sanzera, age 17 (b. 1890), born in Italy, single, white, daughter of Nicola Sanzera and Vincenza Bodera, on 14 April 1907 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA.[3][4]

Leoluca and Josephine have eight children: Frank C. (1908), Nicholas/Nick (1909), Lusia/Lucy (1911), Vincenzia/Virginia/Jennie (1912), Bina/Benna (1914), Salvatore/Samuel/Sammie (1916), Rose (1917), and Marie Margaret/Marjorie/Margie (1928).

Frank is born 30 April 1908 in Los Angeles, according to both his father's 1935 declaration of intention to naturalize, and his mother's in 1956.

Nicholas is born 26 August 1909 at 1638 Tarleton St., Ward 6, Los Angeles, CA, the son of Louis Saballa, 28 (b. 1881), and Joseph Sanzel, 16 (b. 1893), both of this address, both born in Italy. Louis is a fruit shipper. Joseph has had two children, both living.[5] His parents both report his birthday is 27 August 1909 when they declare their intentions to naturalize, 21 years apart.

In the 1910 federal census of Los Angeles Precinct 94, Los Angeles Co., CA, taken 16 April, Lew Sabello, 28 (b. 1882), and his wife of three years, Josephine, 18 (b. 1892), live at 1639 1/2 Tarleton St. They were born in Italy. Lew emigrated in 1905 and Josephine in 1895. Lew is a fruit peddler working on his own account. Josephine has had two children, both living. With them are their children Frank, 2 (b. 1908), and Nick, eight months (b. Aug 1909), both born in CA.[6]

Lusia is born at her parents’ home at 2259 E. 16th St., Los Angeles, CA on 1 August 1911. She is the daughter of Luco Sabella, 29 (b. 1882), a fruit dealer, born in Italy, and Giuseppa Sausieri, age 18 (b. 1893), born in Italy. Giuseppa has had three children, all living.[7] The record of her death gives Lucy's birthdate as 22 June 1911.

Vincenzia is born in her parents’ home at 1502 E. 52nd St., Los Angeles on 1 September 1912. She is the legitimate daughter of Luco Sabella, age 30 (b. 1882), a fruit dealer, and Giuseppina Sausieri, age 19 (b. 1893), both born in Italy. Giuseppina has had four children, all living.[8] Vincenza appears as "Jenny" in census records and her father's 1935 declaration of intention. Her mother calls her "Virginia" in her 1956 declaration.

Bina is born in her parents’ home at 1407 E. 51st St., Los Angeles on 19 July 1914. She is the legitimate daughter of Luco Sabella, 32 (b. 1882), a fruit peddler, and Giuseppina Sausieri, 21 (b. 1893), both born in Italy. Giuseppina has had 5 children, all living.[9] She is called "Rena" in her mother's 1956 declaration, and her date of birth remembered by her mother as 11 July 1914.

Sara in the 1920 census is Samuel or Sammie, born 25 December 1916 in Los Angeles, according to his parents' declarations of intention. He marries as Salvatore.

Leoluca Sabella declares his intent to become a naturalized citizen of the United States on 23 April 1917. He is 35, a fruit merchant, born in Corleone on 7 August 1881. He lives at 1505 E. 52nd St., Los Angeles. He emigrated on the Vincenzo Florio in the port of New Orleans on 7 May 1905. His wife’s name is Giuseppina, born in Italy.[10]

Rose is born in Los Angeles on 9 November 1917, according to her father, and on 11 September 1917, according to her mother, who each name her in their declarations of intention to naturalize.

Luca Sabella registers for the draft for WWI on 12 September 1918. He lives at 1505 E. 52nd St., Los Angeles, CA. He is 37 years old, born 7 August 1881. He is an Italian subject, a fruit pedler in business for himself from the same address. His contact is Josephine Sabella, wife, at the same address. Luca is of medium height and build with blue eyes and black hair.[11]

In the 1920 federal census of Los Angeles, taken 3 January, Lucas Sabela, 38 (b. 1882), heads a household at 1505 East 52nd St. with his wife Josephine 27 (b. 1893). Both were born in Italy. Lucas emigrated in 1905 and Josephine in 1895. Lucas is a fruit peddler working on his own account. Their children are on the next page.[12]

The Sabela children in the 1920 census are Frank, 11 (b. 1909), Nick, 10 (b. 1910), Lucy, 8 (b. 1912), Jennie, 7 (b. 1913), Bena, 5 (b. 1915), Sara, 4 (b. 1916), and Rosa, 2 (b. 1918). All born in CA.[13]

Marie Margaret Sabella is born 4 April 1928 at 1116 E. 76th St., Huntington Park (rural registration district), Los Angeles Co., CA. She is the daughter of Louis Sabella, 46 (b. 1882), and Josephine Sunseri, 36 (b. 1892), of the same address. Both parents born in Italy. Louis is a fruit dealer. Josephine has had 8 children, all living.[14]

In the 1930 federal census of San Antonio, Los Angeles Co., CA, Luca Sabella, 47 (b. 1883), heads a household at 1116 E. 76th St. He owns his home, worth $3,000. He first married at 25 and his wife Josephine, 37 (b. 1893), at 16 (m. 1908-9). Both were born in Italy. Their children at home were all born in CA: Frank, 22 (b. 1908), Nick, 20 (b. 1910), Lucy, 18 (b. 1912), Virginia, 17 (b. 1913), Anna, 15 (b. 1915), Sam, 14 (b. 1916), Rose, 12 (b. 1918), and Marjorie, 2 (b. 1928). Luca emigrated in 1906 and Josephine in 1895. Luca is a fruit dealer with a stand. Frank is a sheet metal worker. Nick works with his father as a fruit dealer.[15]

Miss Lucy Sabella of 1116 E. 76th St., Los Angeles dies on 13 April 1932 from right peritonsillar abscess and multiple pulmonary infections. She is 20 years old. She was born 22 June 1911 in Los Angeles, the daughter of Luca Sabella and Josephine Sunseri, both of Corleone, Italy. The informant is Luca Sabella of the same home address. Lucy is buried in Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles on 16 April.[16]

Frank C. Sabella, age 25 (b. 1909), native of California, and Nina Sunseri, age 22 (b. 1912), native of Pennsylvania, both residents of Los Angeles, CA, are wed on 11 February 1934 by a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Los Angeles. Frank lives at 1624 E. 81st St., Los Angeles. He works in sheet metal for the city-H.B.[17]

Leonard Barilone, age 21 (b. 1913), and Lena Sabella, age 20 (b. 1914), both natives of CA and residents of Los Angeles, are wed on 8 September 1934 in St. Malachy’s Church. Lena Sabella lives at 1116 E. 76th St., Los Angeles. She is 20 years old, born in CA, daughter of Luca Sabella and Josephine Sunsere, both of Italy.[18]

Leoluca again declares his intent to become a naturalized citizen of the United States, in Los Angeles County, California, on 11 February 1935. He lives at 1116 E. 76th St., Los Angeles. He is a fruit dealer, age 53, born in Corleone on 7 August 1881. He married in Los Angeles on 14 April 1907 to Josephine, who was born in Trabia on 24 December 1892. He has seven children: Frank (b. 30 Apr 1908), Nick (b. 27 Aug 1909), Jennie (b. 11 Sep 1912), Benna (b. 11 Jul 1914), Sammie (b. 25 Dec 1916), Rose (b. 9 Nov 1917), Margie (b. 4 Apr 1928), all born and residing in Los Angeles. Leoluca emigrated on the Vincenzo Florio, arriving in New Orleans on 5 May 1905.[19]

Luca Sabella, of 1116 E. 76th St., Los Angeles, dies in Georgia St. Hospital in Los Angeles on 25 November 1935 from injuries sustained when he was struck by a car that day. He was married to Josephine Sabella. Born 7 August 1881, age 54, a fruit peddler for 29 years (since 1906). His city of birth is unknown to the informant. He was born in Italy the son of Frank Sabella and unknown, both of Italy. He was a resident of Los Angeles and the US for 31 years. The informant is Frank Sabella of 1629 E. 80th St. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery on 29 November 1935.[20]

Although he has died, Leoluca appears at the head of his household in the 1940 census at the same street address where he has lived since 1928.

In the 1940 federal census of the unincorporated place of Florence, in the township of San Antonio, Los Angeles County, CA, taken 11 April, Louie Sabella, 54 (b. 1886), heads a household at 1116 E. 76th St. with his wife Josephine, 47 (b. 1893). They own their home, worth $2,000. At home are children Frank, 31 (b. 1909), originally entered as married and then this is changed but not sure to what. Nick, 30 (b. 1910), Sam, 24 (b. 1916), and Marjorie, 12 (b. 1928). Louie is a fruit vendor working on his own account. Frank is a fireman. Nick is a fruit vender. Sam is a molder in a foundry.[21]

Salvadore Sabella, age 24 (b. 1916), and Helen Giertz, age 20 (b. 1920), both natives of CA, and residents of Los Angeles, are wed on 24 August 1940 in Bethany Ev. Lutheran Church in Los Angeles. Salvadore Sabella lives at 1116 E. 76th St., Los Angeles. He is 24, born in Los Angeles, a moulder in a foundry, son of Luca Sabella and Josephine Sunsui, both of Italy.[22]

Lester Joseph Arton and Marie Margaret Sabella marry on 4 February 1950. Marie Margaret lives at 1116 E. 76th St., Los Angeles. She is 21 (b. 1929), single, born in Los Angeles, daughter of Luca Sabella, born in Italy, and Josephine Sunseri, born in Palermo, Italy.[23]

Josephine Sabella, nee Sunseri, aka Giuseppa, petitions for naturalization (No. 186685) in the US District Court in Los Angeles, CA. She lives at 9438 East Woodford St., Pico, CA. She is a housewife, age 62, born 24 December 1892 in Trabia, Palermo, Italy. Female, light complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, 5’1.5”, 173#, Italian national, widow of Leo Lucas Sabella. They married 14 April 1907 in Los Angeles, CA. He was born in Corleone, Italy on 7 August 1881. She does not know the ship or date in which he emigrated. He is deceased.

Josephine has seven children, all born in Los Angeles. She lists four living children in this section of the application, and three more in the table where she is supposed to write about her travels abroad: Frank, born 30 April 1908, lives in Huntington Park, CA. Nicholas, born 27 August 1909, lives with her. Virginia, born 11 September 1912, lives in Montebello, CA. Rena, born 11 July 1914, lives in Rivera, CA. Josephine lawfully entered the US at the port of New York on 16 May 1898 aboard the SS Karamania under the name Giuseppa Sunseri. Three more of her children are listed: Samuel, born 25 December 1916, lives in Los Angeles. Rose, born 11 September 1917, lives in Rivera, CA. Marie, born 4 April 1928, lives in Downey, CA.[1]

Josephine has lived continuously in the US since her arrival. Alien reg. no. 5767479.

Affidavit of witnesses sworn by Charlotte Barilone of 15337 Jupiter, Whittier, CA and Lena Hammond, 9635 Woodhue, Rivera, CA, both housewives, on 18 October 1955 in Los Angeles, CA.

Josephine’s petition is denied, list no. 638, on 1 June 1956 for want of prosecution.[1] She petitions again, three years later.

Josephine Sabella, residing at 7409 Bennington Ave., Pico-Rivera, Calif., born 24 December 1892, is admitted as a US citizen on 10 April 1959 by the US District Court at Los Angeles, CA. Petition no. 212859. Alien Reg. No. 5767479.[24]

Death of Josephine

Josephine Sabella, born 24 December 1892, dies in Los Angeles on 15 September 1969 at age 77. She last resided in Pico Rivera, Los Angeles, CA 90660.[25][26]

Frank, also called Chico, dies 10 March 1987 in Ventura, CA[27] at age 78. He is buried in Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Memorial Park in Westlake Village, Los Angeles County with his wife, Nina.[28]
