Alexander Sutherland was born on 3 Jul 1809 in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland^[1], son of Gavin Sutherland (1791 - ) and Janet (Gibson) Sutherland (~1787 - ).

Alexander married Mary Dempster (born in Greenock, Renfrewshire, Scotland before 16 Oct 1814) on 15 Jul 1832 in Greenock.^[2] Their children were:

• Isabella Sutherland (1834 - )
• Helen Sutherland (1841 - )
• Mary Begg (Sutherland) Wallace (~1841 - 1923)
• Jessie Sutherland (1850 - )
