Percy Alfred Gregory Sutton was born on 4 February 1900, at Woodlands, Southland, New Zealand.^[1] He was the son of William Sutton (1862-1941) and Sophia Waddell (1869-1912).

Percy married Vera Dorothy Fensom (1907-1987) on 21 March 1928, at Kumara, West Coast, New Zealand. They had ten children, seven sons and three daughters.
