Biography

The daughter of Walter Sweigard and Amanda (Nation) Sweigard, Mary Sweigard was born in Sharpsburg Township, Iowa in 1903,[1] residing with her family, by 1910, in Marshall Township, Iowa.[2] By 1920, Mary had moved with her family to Colorado, taking up residence in New Raymer Township.[3] Mary Sweigard married Samuel Thompson McCrea (1884-1938), the son of James McCrea and Jane McDowell, marrying in Evans Township, Colorado on October 6, 1923[4] and having two children together:

  1. James Thompson McCrea (1926-2003)
  2. John Samuel McCrea (1931-1931)

They made their home for a time in Marshall Township, Iowa,[5] Mary McCrea's husband died in Bedford Township, Iowa in 1938; in 1940, Mary lived in North Akron, Colorado, lodging with widow Kathryn Huey and working as an Adult Eductation teacher for the Works Progress Administration.[6] In 1950, she and her son, James McCrea, lived in Pueblo, Colorado,[7] where Mary sold insurance products and her son worked as a switchman for the railroad.

Mary McCrea passed away at the age of 49 and is buried at Imperial Memorial Gardens in Pueblo, Colorado.[8]
