Biography

John W Swick was born about 1834-1835 in Virginia.[1]

IN 1850 ...[[ If Phebe Swick (45) is his mother]], John was 16, and still living with his family in Barbour, Virginia - Phebe was listed as head of household with 9 possible children ranging in age from 7 to 23 (no relationships are given)[2]

John married Mary Jane maiden name not yet known after 28 Sep 1850 and prior to 1855. (Census records as indicated above and below show that he was single on 28 Sep 1850 and already married with 3 children (one being about age 6) on 27 Jul 1860.)

On 27 Jul 1860 John W and Mary Jane were living in Barbour, Virginia with their three children - Edward L Swick(6), Charles C Swick (3), and Phebe C Swick(1).[3]

Apr 1863 - 20 Jun 1863: The new state of West Virginia was established and Barbour was no longer in Virginia, but as of 20 Jun 1863 now in West Virginia. Confederate forces had occupied a portion of West Virginia during the war, but West Virginian statehood was nonetheless approved in a referendum and a state constitution drawn up. In April 1863, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the admission of West Virginia into the Union effective June 20, 1863.[[1]]

On 1 Jul 1863 at age 28, John registered for the Civil War Draft - all that is shown is that he was white, married, working as a farmer, and resided in Barbour, WV in Congressional District 2. An Isaac Swick (age 24), a single farmer (also born in Virginia) is also listed on the same registration page. He may or may not be related.[1]

On 10 Jun 1880, John (46) and Mary Jane (54) and three children - Mary V Swick (8), Simon M Swick (abt.1861-1913) (18), and Sarena Swick (17) were living in Pleasant, Barbour, WV (note that the area became known as West Virginia 2 years after Simon M was born). John, who worked as a farm laborer, was sick with asthma at the time of the census.[4]

It is not yet known where and when he died.
