Henry was born in 1814 Wottenheim, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany. He passed away in 1889. He came to America in the spring of 1845, and settled first in Riley township. Before coming to this country, he had served twelve years in the German Army. When the Mexican War broke out, being still endued with the military spirit, on July 10, 1847, he enlisted in Company C, 4th Regiment OVI (Capt. Samuel Thompson's company) and served for two years until the close of the war. He participated in the battles of Pueblo, October 12, and Atlixco, October 19, 1847. After returning home he was married to Rosina Reineck, August 28, 1848, who was born in 1831 in Baden, Germany, daughter of Anthony and Catharine Reineck, one of eleven children, eight sons and three daughters. Henry Swint was be trade a weaver, but after his marriage he settled down to farming in Rice Township, which he therefore pursued the remainder of his life.
After Henry and Rosina were married they changed their name from Gschwind to Swint.
