Mrs. Bartsch, whose death occurred on Saturday at the residence of her daughter, in Alexandra-avenue, Rose Park, at the age of 83 years, was born in Truro Cornwall, on July 2, 1844. A colonist of 79 years, she came to this State with her parents on the Trafalgar, arriving at Port Adelaide on her fourth birthday. The family resided in Adelaide, and then following the course of most Cornish people at that time, proceeded to Burra, where the mines were in full swing. Later they removed to Clare, and were among the early settlers in that district, Mrs. Bartsch lived there until her marriage with Mr. W. H. Bartsch, at Wallaroo Mines. Mr. Bartsch was a surveyor in his younger days, and was with the famous Goyder party when the district round Mount Remarkable was surveyed. On a recent visit of his daughters to the scene, the remains of the flagmast planted on the mountain top were seen. Mr. Bartsch was also with Goyder's party when the well-known Goyder's line of rainfall was defined. After his marriage, Mr. Bartsch became a school teacher, and while in the employ of the Education Department lived in many country towns. Mr. Bartsch, who died in Lameroo about seven years ago, was well known and respected, both as a teacher and a musician. When the young couple returned to Clare to live he was prominent in the orchestra of that town. As a violinist he also played in the Theatre Royal Orchestra. They lived in Clare, Kapunda, Neil's Flat, Peep Hill, and Lameroo in turn. Mr. Bartsch died at Lameroo, and Mrs. Bartsch came to Adelaide, and passed the remaining years of her life with her daughters. There are 11 surviving children—Messrs. A. and H. Bartsch (Queensland), F. Bartsch (Macclesfield), W. Bartsch (Alberton), and C. Bartsch (Mypolonga), also Mrs. Pfitzner (Murray Bridge), Mrs. Riemiers (Hartley), Mrs. O. Bruns (Rose Park). Mrs. O'Sullivan (Helmsdale), and Misses E. F. and E. G. Bartsch (Adelaide).
She was buried at Murray Bridge Town Cemetery, Murray Bridge, Murray Bridge Rural City, South Australia, with her husband, Wilhelm Hermann.
